ASTM Pressure Vessel Steel Plate

What is Pressure Vessel Steel Plate?

Pressure vessel steel plate covers a range of steel grades that are designed for use in pressure vessel, boilers, heat exchangers and any other vessel that contains a gas or liquid at high pressures. Familiar examples include gas cylinders for cooking and for welding, oxygen cylinders for diving and many of the large metallic tanks that you see in an oil refinery or chemical plant. There is a huge range of different chemicals and liquid that that stored and processed under pressure. These range from relatively benign substances such as milk and palm oil to crude oil and natural gas and their distillates to highly lethal acids and chemicals such as methyl isocyanate. So of these processes need the gas or liquid to be very hot, whilst others contain it at very low temperatures. As a result there is a wide variety of different pressure vessel steel grades that meet the different use cases.

In general these can be divided into three groups. There is a group of carbon steel pressure vessel grades. These are standard steels and can cope with many applications where there is low corrosion and low heat. As heat and corrosion have more effect on the steel plates chromium, molybdenum and nickel are added to provide additional resistance. Finally as the % of chromium, nickel and molybdenum increase you have highly resistant stainless steel plates that are used in critical applications and where oxide contamination needs to be avoided – such in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

The manufacture of pressure vessels is tightly regulated as a result of the risks involved and as a consequence the materials that can be used in vessels is also tightly specified. The most common specifications for pressure vessel steels are the EN10028 standards – which are European in origin – and the the ASME/ASTM standards which are from the US.

Our strength is in the very high specification pressure vessel  steel plate used in the oil and gas industry and specifically in steel plate resistant to Hydrogen Induced Cracking (HIC) where we have one of the largest stocks worldwide.

Standard:  A202, A203, A204, A285, A299, A302, A387, A515, A516, A517, A533, A537, A612, A662, EN10028-2, EN10028-3, EN10028-5, EN10028-6, JIS G3103, JIS G3115, GB713, GB3531, DIN 17155

Pressure vessel steel plate is used for many applications where the pressure inside is significantly higher than atmospheric pressure.

Pressure Vessel Steel Plate Applications:
  1. A516 steel plate is carbon steel with specifications for pressure vessel plates and moderate or lower temperature service.
  2. A537 is heat-treated and as a consequence, displays greater yield and tensile strength than the more standard A516 grades.
  3. A612 is used for moderate and lower temperature pressure vessel applications.
  4. A285 steel plates are intended for fusion-welded pressure vessels and plates are typically supplied in the as-rolled conditions.
  5. TC128-grade B has been normalized and used in pressurized railroad tank cars.
Other Applications for Boiler and Pressure Vessel Plate:
  • boilers
  • calorifiers
  • columns
  • dished ends
  • filters
  • flanges
  • heat exchangers
  • pipelines
  • pressure vessels
  • tank cars
  • storage tanks
  • valves

Classification Of Pressure Vessel Steel Plate

Pressure vessel steel plate

Pressure vessel steel plate covers carbon steel and alloy steel grades, which are designed for use in making pressure vessels, boilers, heat exchangers and any other vessels and tanks that to store liquid or gas at high pressures. It includes applications like below or similar:

  • Crude Oil Storage Tanks
  • Natural Gas Storage Tanks
  • Chemicals and Liquid Storage Tanks
  • Firewater Tanks
  • Diesel Storage Tanks
  • Gas Cylinders for Welding
  • Gas Cylinders for Cooking in peoples daily life
  • Oxygen Cylinders for Diving

There are a wide range of different liquid and chemicals that need to be stored under pressure.  Such us food, milk, plam oil, crude oil, natural gas includes their distillates to highly lethal acides which is bad to environments, so these liquid or gas shall be kept in high or low temperatures. Therefore, pressure vessel plates covers a wide range of steel grades which to use in different cases.

Carbon Steel Pressure Vessel Grades

Pressure Vessel Steel provides premium quality carbon steel plate for boiler and pressure vessel fabrication which is perfectly suited to the high standards set by the oil, gas, and petrochemical equipment, Octal stocks a wide range of dimensions of ASTM A516 GR70, A283 Grade C, ASTM A537 CL1/CL2.

Low Alloy Pressure Vessel Grades

The material grades that between pure carbon steel pressure vessel grades and stainless steel plates. Typically standards is ASTM A387, 16Mo3 these steels have improved corrosion and temperature resistance over the standard carbon steels but without the cost of stainless steels (due to their lower nickel and chromium content).

ASTM A516 Grade 70 is an excellent choice for service in lower than ambient temperature applications, has excellent notch toughness and is used in both pressure vessels and industrial boilers.

A516 Grade 70 offers greater tensile and yield strength when compared to ASTM A516 Grade 65 and can operate in even lower temperature service.

Our plates come with mill certification in accordance with EN10204 3.1 or EN10204 3.2. Our plates are fully traceable, usually with hard stamping and we welcome any third party or customer inspection if required which can be arranged with the client.

Boiler Quality Steel Sheet A516 Pressure Vessel Steel

Boiler Quality Steel Sheet A516 Pressure Vessel Steel

We have listed the chemical and physical properties of the grades on the table below to allow for clear comparison. ASME SA 516 gr 70 has the highest tensile and yield strength of the three grades and this is due to the higher carbon content of the steel. The other principal alloying elements are the same as the other two ASME SA 516 grades.

Generally the higher the grade, in this case ASME SA 516 gr 70, the higher quality steel it is considered to be and the wider the range of possible applications. Our experience is that customers tend to choose either ASME SA 516 gr 60 or ASME SA 516 gr 70, with ASME SA 516 gr 65 being less popular. This is because the small difference between the grades mean that many heats of A516 70 can be dual or triple certified for all three grades and the small price differential means that for procurement purposes the additional cost of procuring ASME SA 516 gr 70 is small, whilst the engineering and logistical benefits can be significant.

ASME and ASTM Standards are harmonised so ASME SA 516 gr 70 is exactly the same as ASTM A 516 gr 70. On some specifications this is written as ASTM/ASME A/SA 516 gr70 or a similar combination of the same meaning.

ASTM A516-70 Plate As Rolled

ASTM A516-70 Plate As Rolled

ASTM A516 Grade 70 Plate is also called out as ASME SA516-70.  This steel plate grade is a medium carbon alloy that also contains amounts of manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, and silicon. A516 is primarily used for service in welded pressure vessels where improved notch toughness is required. It is typically found in moderate and lower temperature applications. A516 is sometimes called PVQ516.

Supplementary testing such as Charpy Impacts, Ultrasonic Examination and Carbon Equivalency are available. All plates over 1-1/2″ Thick are required to be normalized.  A516 is the most popular Pressure Vessel grade of steel plate in the industry. It is produced in grades 55, 60, 65 or 70.  The most common is Grade 70 or called out A516-70.
