ASTM A516 Grade 70 is an excellent choice for service in lower than ambient temperature applications, has excellent notch toughness and is used in both pressure vessels and industrial boilers.

A516 Grade 70 offers greater tensile and yield strength when compared to ASTM A516 Grade 65 and can operate in even lower temperature service.

Our plates come with mill certification in accordance with EN10204 3.1 or EN10204 3.2. Our plates are fully traceable, usually with hard stamping and we welcome any third party or customer inspection if required which can be arranged with the client.

Boiler Quality Steel Sheet A516 Pressure Vessel Steel

We have listed the chemical and physical properties of the grades on the table below to allow for clear comparison. ASME SA 516 gr 70 has the highest tensile and yield strength of the three grades and this is due to the higher carbon content of the steel. The other principal alloying elements are the same as the other two ASME SA 516 grades.

 

Generally the higher the grade, in this case ASME SA 516 gr 70, the higher quality steel it is considered to be and the wider the range of possible applications. Our experience is that customers tend to choose either ASME SA 516 gr 60 or ASME SA 516 gr 70, with ASME SA 516 gr 65 being less popular. This is because the small difference between the grades mean that many heats of A516 70 can be dual or triple certified for all three grades and the small price differential means that for procurement purposes the additional cost of procuring ASME SA 516 gr 70 is small, whilst the engineering and logistical benefits can be significant.

 

ASME and ASTM Standards are harmonised so ASME SA 516 gr 70 is exactly the same as ASTM A 516 gr 70. On some specifications this is written as ASTM/ASME A/SA 516 gr70 or a similar combination of the same meaning.

ASTM A516 Grade 70 Plate is also called out as ASME SA516-70.  This steel plate grade is a medium carbon alloy that also contains amounts of manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, and silicon. A516 is primarily used for service in welded pressure vessels where improved notch toughness is required. It is typically found in moderate and lower temperature applications. A516 is sometimes called PVQ516.

Supplementary testing such as Charpy Impacts, Ultrasonic Examination and Carbon Equivalency are available. All plates over 1-1/2″ Thick are required to be normalized.  A516 is the most popular Pressure Vessel grade of steel plate in the industry. It is produced in grades 55, 60, 65 or 70.  The most common is Grade 70 or called out A516-70.
